LIGHT/DARK MODE

Carrie Bradshaw is the WORST

from pinterest

Old habits die hard and end with the smut city train. On the event of 26 years since 'Sex and The City' aired, we have things to discuss. Everyone has watched Sex & The City (original), and Sex & The City 2. The series is where we see the rise and fall of the gang, with all their individual flaws and quirks. I'm only watching it for the first time and it is VERY sensual and booze-heavy and SEX obsessed.

The evolution of Charlotte and Miranda is what kept me hooked! They are so different - Charlotte wants to be a home-maker and Miranda is a stubborn lawyer with a need for fantastic sex and someone who keeps up with her schedule. Samantha is a sex fein and all power to her - she knows what she wants; she's headstrong in her career and demands respect inside and outside the bedroom.

Carrie is a gay guy's sport. She's a wreck and for no good reason! I'm a feminist through and through, meaning let women be who they want and have what they want. Except, she whines like a needy cat and her 'on-screen' besties get sick of it (good)! Carrie gets drunk and abuses Big and comes back around apologising with a French cosplay and McDonalds (I'm on S2, E13). The overly emotional author is one to nurture and beware of. Carrie writes about her everyday life in her weekly column for The New York Times and with that comes the need for experience. I'll give it to her, she puts herself out there on a dinner plate and lets the city eat her up. She certainly goes through the mill of NYC as a struggling artist (kinda), but then she reaps success and can afford Manolo Blahniks and Chanel. The unattainable lunches everyday with an expending tray of Cosmopolitans is so out of touch and I NEED to have it.

I also cannot get over the episode where she is need of money and utterly poor, and all the girls - apart from Charlotte, offer to help Carrie financially. Carrie declines graciously, but presses Charlotte as to why she didn't offer. Charlotte put it simple "Your finances are not my problem." It's true, there is no obligation to fund your friends and their down-payment. What I HATED was Carrie's audacity to question Charlotte and her commitment to Carrie. Carrie is a self-centred biatch with big big balls (pun intended).

I've aspired to be Carrie for as long as I can remember - I dressed lavishly as a preteen (ghastly purple matching corduroy skirt & blazer), and I now have a type-writer, officially living crème de la crème. Carrie inserts herself as the main character when in actual fact, her friends are the main feature. She is no one without her band of ladies, and she cuts them down in pursuit of men, except when sh*t turns to custard and she uses her friends for external validation.

"Yeah Big and I play games, look where it got us?" Carrie says very nonchalant. Well honey, it's you playing the mind games. Big is a finance bro, he is a busy man and he shows his love through service. Carrie's love language is words of affirmation and quality time, something Big gives in small doses and when he can. Whereas, Carrie thinks the world revolves around her as a fun-employed/freelanced-writer. She cannot expect everyone to suddenly quit their jobs and kneel down in front of her.

Despite Carrie's immense manipulation strategies and tragic whining, she makes the Met Gala look cringe. Carrie cares about wardrobe and wardrobe cares for her.  She elevates each year from Hamptons to Von Dutch, from Vivienne Westwood to Gucci, to Dolce & Cabbana and even the odd op-shop find. Carrie is the cult accessoriser with lace gloves and vests, stripy layers and chunky jewellery. Her hair is incredible - both naturally curly and straightened.

Oh to prance along the New York streets at noon, avoiding rubbish and rats and sepia-toned suits.

That's all for now xx
